This Comeragh Food Tour Offers a Mountain of Experiences

Taste Waterford, the food and drink network of the county, launched a new food tour in May this year…and it’s growing in popularity with locals and tourists alike. The focus of the tour is on the Comeragh Mountains and gives you the opportunity to see what it’s like to live and work in this special landscape.

The Mountain Splendour Taste Tour gives you a chance to see shepherding in action, visit a sustainable farm and forage at Crough woods.

The next tour date is this Friday, September 15, with more dates to be announced throughout the year.

The food and drink offering in Co. Waterford is world-class, and Taste Waterford aims to highlight this passionate and varied offering to locals and visitor alike.

Plus, they have just partnered with the Granville Hotel to offer an award-winning breakfast before the Taste Tour starts.

Your local tour guide is Johnny Landers, who will offer a fascinating insight into passionate producers and food stories passed down through the generations.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Experience shepherding with Willie Drohan of Comeragh Mountain Lamb
  • Sustainable farm visit with Clotilde Kiely, Comeragh Mountain Farm
  • Lunch at Cooney’s Yard in a converted farm building
  • Mountain forage at Crough Wood
  • Hear food producer stories
  • Coach travel to bring you from the Granville after breakfast at 10 a.m., returning to the Granville at 3.50 p.m.

The six-hour tour leaves from The Granville Hotel after you meet your tour guide Johnny Landers.

Richard Povey, Taste Waterford project manager, said: “This is the perfect way to get a true insight into our passionate food heritage and producers, whilst exploring the beautiful Comeragh Mountains.

“The tour supports our members and their food story…and encourages visitors and tourists to explore the county and food offerings, and stay longer in Ireland’s Ancient East—adding to the local economy.”

Taste Waterford has become recognised as the membership-based food and drink brand for producers, and the retail and hospitality sectors in the county. Members benefit from a range of marketing, training and networking supports.

Taste Waterford also offers a comprehensive website and initiatives to allow locals, and tourists to Co. Waterford to access a range of quality food and drink producers, along with where to enjoy the produce, accommodation providers and foodie experiences.

Billy Duggan, Senior Executive Officer for Economic Development at Waterford City & County Council, said: “The Mountain Splendour Taste Tour is a terrific addition to Waterford’s tourism offering. This incredibly well-designed tour is a perfect way to experience the stunning Comeragh region.

“In completing the tour, visitors will be immersed in the beautiful landscape as well as learning about what it is like to live in and work the land in the area, and who better to learn from than local experts like Andrew Malcolm and Willie Drohan.

“The trail comes to an end in the perfect way, by sitting down to enjoy something delicious to eat in the truly unique surroundings of Cooney’s Yard. Whether you are interested in foraging, learning from some of Waterford’s best food producers or hearing some great stories about the Comeragh Mountains—this trail will have something for you to enjoy.”

This Taste Tour will give you a true insight into passionate producers, food stories passed down through the generations, and scenic splendour that can only come from Co. Waterford’s stunning mountains.
