Heritage and history:

  • What: Let’s Talk Waterford: Tides & Tales, in the Great Western’s Wake
  • Where: Jordan’s Bar, the Quay
  • When: 1 p.m.

Andrew Doherty of Tides & Tales fame tells of the generations of Waterford people who travelled and worked aboard the SS Great Western—a ship that connected Waterford port with Fishguard in Wales from 1934 to 1966.

In that time, the quays bustled with animal exports and imported goods from our nearest neighbour. The ship became a symbol of a vibrant and changing country. Andrew relates the story of the ship, its cargos, her toiling crew and many passengers.

Heritage and history:

  • What: Folklore.ie Waterford and Newfoundland: A Connection “So Far”
  • Where: Granville Hotel, the Quay
  • When: 7.30 p.m.

In the early 1600s ships started to sail from Europe to newly discovered cod fishing grounds of Newfoundland. Because cod fed the armies of the world, Newfoundland became a very lucrative destination.

By the 17th century an Irish dimension was introduced to the cod fisheries in the form of workers for the fish trade. Between 1800 and 1830, over 35,000 people from Waterford City and beyond settled in sparsely populated Newfoundland. The south-east Irish brought with them their own traditions and customs.

Find out more about this extraordinary story and a connection like no other…anywhere else in the world.

This event will also be live-streamed on Waterford.FYI and WLR FM.
