Waterford Shines Bright: Discover the Magic of the City of Light Trail

Something truly special is lighting up our city! Waterford recently launched the latest phase of its ‘City of Light’ project, transforming our historic streets and iconic buildings into a captivating canvas after dark. It’s a brilliant way to see Waterford in a whole new glow, whether you’re a local or just visiting.

This fantastic initiative by Waterford City and County Council, supported by Fáilte Ireland, has brought 19 strategic locations to life with stunning illuminations. Imagine our medieval walls and beloved buildings bathed in light, creating a magical atmosphere.

The light trail isn’t just pretty lights; it’s a thoughtful journey connecting four key areas: the ancient Viking Triangle, the lively Apple Market, our bustling retail spine, and the creative Cultural Quarter. Each district gets its moment to shine, inviting you to explore their unique charm. What makes this phase extra special are the unique, thought-provoking works of art projected onto these locations. Inspired by the spirit of Samhain and Waterford’s rich history, these pieces were created by talented Irish artists like Darragh Lyons, Anne McDonnell, Karen Nolan, Dan O’Neill, Brian O’Shea, and Vadim Taranenko. As Mayor Cllr. Seamus Ryan put it, their creativity has “transformed our city walls into works of light and imagination.”

Beyond the beauty, the ‘City of Light’ also makes our city centre feel safer and more welcoming after dark. It’s all about creating an inviting atmosphere for everyone – families, visitors, and us locals – to enjoy Waterford’s evenings. And there’s more to look forward to! In 2026, the project will continue with artists exploring the theme of Imbolc, celebrating the beginning of spring with even more unique art.
