Thomas Francis Meagher Fest: A Weekend of History, Discussion, and Celebration!
Well, what a weekend it was! Waterford was buzzing with activity as we celebrated the 177th anniversary of Thomas Francis Meagher and the Tricolour.

Friday: A Walk Through History
The weekend kicked off with a phenomenal historic walk led by the brilliant Donnchadh Ó Ceallacháin and Cliona Purcell from Waterford Museum. They brought Thomas Francis Meagher’s life in Waterford to life, sharing hidden stories and gems that really showed off the city’s vibrant history. From his birthplace at the Granville Hotel to his home where he was arrested (now Sabai restaurant, where everyone gathered for a bite!), it was a proper Waterford experience.

Later that evening, we settled in to hear Colonel James P. Tierney chat about his new book, “From Dublin to Bull Run to Baghdad and Beyond: The Story of the Fighting 69th.”

Saturday: Debate, Dialogue, and a Gala Night!
Saturday saw a fully sold-out public lecture series. It was great to see so many folks engaging in debate and discussion about the meaning of the Irish flag today. A massive thanks to all the speakers who gave their time and perspectives.

That night, everyone scrubbed up for the gala dinner. Black ties and gowns were the order of the day! A lone piper kicked things off, followed by a moving re-enactment of Thomas Francis Meagher’s speech by the brilliant actor Paul Sheehan. He absolutely nailed it! Check out the video below.

Big thanks to Committee Chair Eamonn McEneaney and everyone else involved, including keynote speaker and Teachta Dála of Ireland, Mary Butler. The music, played beautifully on harps and bagpipes, created a beautiful atmosphere.

Sunday: A Proud Parade
The weekend wrapped up with a military parade, the raising of the flag, and the laying of a wreath. Paul Sheehan was back, this time personifying Thomas Francis Meagher as he delivered his iconic speech on the meaning of the Irish flag. Goosebumps, sure I had them!
Until Next Year!
We’re already looking forward to next year’s celebration! In the meantime, have a look at all the photos and videos on our social media channels. Thanks for making this year’s event so special!
