Round-About Time! Farronshoneen Roundabout Under Review After Safety Concerns

Farronshoneen Roundabout: What’s Happening?

Well, it looks like the Farronshoneen Roundabout is about to get a good look over. Local councillor Jim D’Arcy has confirmed that a review of its layout is on the cards.

Why the Review?

Locals have been uneasy ever since last year’s redesign under the Active Travel initiative. A petition calling for changes has gathered nearly 1,800 signatures. The main concerns? Traffic congestion and safety risks for everyone from drivers to pedestrians.

The Petition’s Demands

  • A thorough review of the roundabout’s design
  • Implementation of safety modifications
  • An independent safety audit

The petition strongly states:

“We won’t stand by as our safety is compromised. The current design has led to accidents and close calls. It needs changing before something serious happens.”

Local Councillors Speak Up

Jim D’Arcy and other councillors have been vocal, even reaching out to the Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien, asking for a rethink on the decision-making powers of Active Travel engineers. They want more input from locals and councillors on road safety.

Current Status

At a recent council meeting, it was announced that no layout changes are planned. However, Jim D’Arcy has had a promising discussion with Sean McKeown, CEO of Waterford City & County Council. McKeown is open to reviewing the layout, which is a step in the right direction.
