Thomas Maher’s: A Timeless Gem in the Heart of Waterford

Nestled in the historic core of Waterford City, Thomas Maher’s, affectionately known as Tom Maher’s, stands as a testament to the city’s rich cultural and historical heritage. This iconic pub, established in 1886 under the name John Britton, has been a cornerstone of Waterford’s social scene for over 137 years, making it one of the oldest and most revered pubs in Ireland.

Located at 20 O’Connell Street, in the heart of Moondharrig House, Thomas Maher’s has a storied past that is as fascinating as it is unique. Originally inherited by Tom Maher from his father, who had married John Britton’s daughter, the pub remained in the Maher family for generations. Tom Maher himself is legendary for being Ireland’s longest-serving publican, having run the pub for an astonishing 77 years. His tenure was marked by a strict policy that only allowed men to be served at the counter, a rule that sparked several protests in the 1990s but remained unchanged until his nephews, Bernard and Martin Kelly, took over and lifted the ban.

Under its new management by Moondharrig Ventures Thomas Maher’s continues to honor its legacy while embracing a new era. The new owners have committed to retaining the pub’s traditional charm, with its beautifully crafted panelling and historic pub front, while introducing subtle modernizations and expanded opening hours. This blend of old and new ensures that the pub remains a vibrant part of Waterford’s nightlife and cultural landscape.

Thomas Maher’s is renowned for its extensive selection of whiskeys, including its famous in-house whiskey blend and the iconic Whiskey Mac, a drink that has become synonymous with the pub. The Whiskey Mac, a secret blend that has been perfected over the years, is available for purchase online and in the pub, making it a must-try for any whiskey enthusiast. The pub also boasts a wide range of Irish, Scotch, Bourbons, and other international whiskeys, along with a variety of beers, stouts, and ciders.

Beyond its impressive beverage offerings, Thomas Maher’s is a hub for local culture and community. The pub frequently hosts live music sessions, including vintage jazz, soul, rock & roll, and other genres, creating a lively atmosphere that appeals to both locals and visitors. Events like “The Freedom Session” and “All or Nothing” Northern Soul 60s Mod nights make it a go-to destination for those looking to experience the city’s vibrant music scene.

For those who appreciate history, tradition, and a warm welcome, Thomas Maher’s is more than just a pub; it is an institution that embodies the spirit of Waterford. Whether you are a local looking for a familiar haunt or a visitor seeking to immerse yourself in the city’s culture, Thomas Maher’s is a must-visit destination that promises an unforgettable experience.

So, step into this historic pub, soak up the atmosphere, and let the stories of its past mingle with the sounds of its present. At Thomas Maher’s, every visit is a journey through time, a celebration of tradition, and a testament to the enduring charm of Waterford City.

Of ALL the pubs in Waterford, you want to visit the Thomas Maher, speak to Clare, the owner, if you can, and have her tell the story of a pub that didn't allow women to drink in it until around 2013, if memory serves. Now that it's women-owned, it makes for a great story and great craic!

Absolutely perfect! The owner had so much pride and knowledge about her pub and was genuinely happy to share it with us. Locals were very friendly. You can’t ask for a better pub.
