Imagine Festival: Waterford – A City of “Firsts”

It’s a full house here in the Reg for the second event in the Let’s Talk Waterford series. We’re getting a history lesson of our city from Tony Barry and Dermot Power.

As well as hearing about some pretty gruesome social history and the food people ate back in the day, we’re also hearing about Waterford Firsts.

The first motor garage was here; Ryanair started in Waterford; the Irish flag first flew here; the first Christian brothers was established; and of course, we have to give a nod to the humble blaa. The invention of the bacon rasher and the creation of the cream cracker–yet more firsts in Waterford. And the city was the wine capital of Ireland—wine was sent from France in casks, bottled here and sent back to France. Coffee was also first introduced to the country in Waterford.

Waterford is a city of “firsts”—who knew!
